Clutter can be defined as anything that is out of place, disorganized, or excessive. It can be physical or mental, and it can affect your home, your life, and your mind. Clutter can make you feel overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious. Too much clutter can also affect your productivity, creativity, and overall well-being.

Clutter can take many forms, such as:

  • Physical clutter: this includes anything that takes up space in your home or office, such as papers, books, clothes, hand me downs from loved ones and other items that you no longer need or use.
  • Mental clutter: this includes thoughts, worries, and concerns that occupy your mind and prevent you from focusing on what is important.
  • Emotional clutter: this includes unresolved feelings, relationships, and issues that drain your energy and affect your mood and behavior.

Clutter can also have a negative impact on your physical environment, such as:

  • Poor air quality: clutter can trap dust, dirt, and other pollutants that can affect your health and well-being.

Decluttering your physical space

Decluttering your physical space is an important step towards a more organized and stress-free life. You need an action plan. Here are some tips for decluttering your home, workspace, and digital space.

Home decluttering

There are many methods to start the decluttering process. Every person is different. Some will start by going through their home room by room. Others may start in a closet or a drawer. Some are so completely overwhelmed by the number of things they have they do not know where to start and stay stuck in the clutter. For the latter, I suggest you reach over and pick up one object that is close to you.

What do you want?

The first thing to decide is if you need or even want this item. If you do, put the object away now. When you have completed this task repeat the process. Decluttering physical things really is this simple.

No matter what method of decluttering you choose I suggest you start by getting a few large heavy duty contractors type trash bags and label them trash, donate, and sell. Each item you choose to discard goes in one of these bags. The stuff you keep needs to be put away. If the item does not have a ‘home’ you need to create a place which will include storage solutions and we will talk about this.

When tackling your closets and drawers take everything out and only keep the items that you wear on a regular basis or that have sentimental value. Consider a minimalist approach and donate any duplicate or unnecessary items. Label your drawers and cabinets to make it easier to find things in the future.

Workspace decluttering

A cluttered workspace can lead to decreased productivity and increased stress. Start by clearing off your desk and only keeping the essentials, such as your computer, phone, and a few necessary supplies. Make filing systems if you collect paper docs. Store these papers or files in labeled drawers or cabinets.

Consider going paperless and storing important documents digitally. Purge any unnecessary papers and shred any sensitive documents that you no longer need. Keep your workspace clean and organized to improve your focus and productivity.

Digital decluttering

In today’s digital age, with all the digital information we receive it’s important to declutter your digital space as well. Start by going through your emails and unsubscribing from any newsletters or promotions that you no longer need. Delete any duplicate or unnecessary files on your computer.

Organize your digital files into folders and label them appropriately for easy access. Back up important files to an external hard drive or cloud storage. Consider purging your social media accounts and unfollowing any accounts that no longer bring you joy or value.

By decluttering your physical, workspace, and digital space, you can create a more organized and stress-free life.

Decluttering your mind

Your mind can be cluttered with thoughts, worries, and distractions that can prevent you from focusing on what’s important. To declutter your mind, you can try the following techniques:

Unplug

Take a break from technology and social media. Life today can include constant notifications and updates can be overwhelming and add to mental clutter. Spend some time in nature or engage in activities that do not involve screens.

When I am all stressed out a quick walk around the neighborhood or on the beach clears my head!

Slow decluttering

Decluttering your mind is not a one-time event. It’s an ongoing process that requires consistency and patience. Start small and gradually work your way to trying different mindset techniques. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.

Journaling

Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you identify patterns and gain clarity. Set aside some time each day to write about your experiences and emotions.

This will help you process your thoughts and declutter your mind. Any life change you are contemplating can be clarified by writing about it. Writing is a great start to clearing your mind. If it is a miserable weather day and my head is jammed up I write about it. This works like magic for me!

Clear your mind

Meditation and mindfulness can help you clear your mind and focus on the present moment. Find a quiet space and take a few deep breaths. Focus on your breath and let go of any distracting thoughts. Don’t discount deep cleansing breaths!

Some find enormous value in adopting a morning routine. Beginning each day with positive thoughts, instead of jumping right into the chaos many families encounter, can go a long way in the kind of day ahead. Personally for me, on a daily basis one of the most important things I do upon wakening is to declare in my head that I intend to have a joyous and productive day.

You would not believe the difference this makes for me. When my head is cluttered with all the daily stress we all have all, what I do is remind myself what the definition of joyous is. This simple declaration in the morning makes my days manageable, because I program into my head the intention of being joyous.

Does this mean I am ridiculously happy all day everyday? Of course not! This means I am aware of my intentions and this reminds me during my day I have a choice to get back on track.

By decluttering your mind, you can improve your focus, reduce stress, and increase your productivity. Try these techniques and see how they work for you. Remember, it’s an ongoing process, so be patient and consistent. Consistentcy is key!

Decluttering your schedule

Your schedule can easily become cluttered with commitments, meetings, and tasks that don’t align with your priorities. Decluttering your schedule can help you regain control of your time and increase your productivity. Here are some tips to help you declutter your schedule:

Identify your priorities

It took me years to learn that being the busiest person in the room, at least in my mind, did not add one iota to the quality of my life. On the contrary. When I learned that allowing myself the little time required to take small breaks throughout my day, my life became much less stressful.

The first step to decluttering your schedule is to identify your priorities. What tasks and commitments are most important to you? Once you have identified your priorities, you can start to eliminate tasks and commitments that don’t align with them. Most of us have busy lives that will flow smoother when you allow yourself a little breathing room.

Create a routine

Creating a routine can help you stay on track and avoid distractions. Start by setting a schedule for your workday and stick to it as much as possible. This will help you stay focused and avoid getting sidetracked by other tasks or distractions.

Those of you that work from home know it is essential to be disciplined to do the tasks at hand. This can be especially hard at home with so many distractions.

Eliminate distractions

Distractions can be a major source of clutter in your schedule. Identify the things that distract you the most and find ways to eliminate them. This could include turning off your phone during work hours, blocking distracting websites, or finding a quiet workspace.

I just read it takes 23 minutes to bring your focus back to your work each time you are distracted. Multiply that times all the distractions and see how much time is being wasted!

Build good habits

Building good habits can help you stay on track and avoid clutter in your schedule. Start by setting small goals for yourself and working towards them each day. As you build momentum, you can start to tackle bigger goals and tasks.

By decluttering your schedule, you can increase your productivity and achieve your goals more efficiently. Take the time to identify your priorities, create a daily routine, eliminate distractions, and build good habits to help you declutter your schedule and achieve success. And remember consistency is necessary!

Decluttering your relationships

When it comes to decluttering your life, you cannot ignore the importance of decluttering your relationships. Relationships are a significant part of our lives, and they can either make us happy or unhappy. Therefore, it’s essential to evaluate your relationships and declutter them to ensure that you only keep the ones that add value to your life.

To declutter your relationships, you need to start by identifying the people in your life who are toxic or draining your energy. These could be people who are constantly negative, always complaining, or always asking for favors without giving anything in return. Once you identify these people, it’s time to start cutting ties.

Detach with love

Cutting ties doesn’t mean that you have to be rude or disrespectful. It simply means that you need to distance yourself from these people and limit your interactions with them. You can do this by setting boundaries and saying no when they ask for your time or help.

Detaching with love is a popular saying in one of the 12 step groups, I think Al-anon.

On the other hand, you need to nurture the relationships that add value to your life. These are the people who support you, encourage you, and make you feel good about yourself. Make time for these people, and let them know how much you appreciate them. It is really important to me to nurture my relationships with friends because I have the best friends a lady could have.

Decluttering your relationships is essential for your emotional well-being. Identify the toxic people in your life and distance yourself from them. Nurture the relationships that add value to your life and make you happy. Remember, you deserve to be surrounded by positive and supportive people.

Practical tips for decluttering

Decluttering your life can seem overwhelming, but with some practical tips, you can shift into action and make progress towards a more organized and minimalist lifestyle.

Start small with baby steps

If you’re feeling really stressed out, the best way to begin decluttering is to start small. Don’t spend too much time worrying about how hard it will be to declutter your whole house and any other number of things you are prone to be anxious about.

A simple way to start decluttering is to focus on one thing. Pick your category, home, mind, relationships, whatever is bugging you the most. If you decide to start with physical clutter in your home empty out a closet or drawer. Then one item at a time make a decision if you will keep, toss, donate or sell the object. This is the edit method.

The edit method works

By curating each object put back only what you truly need and love. An honest appraisal is essential. Ask yourself if each item serves a purpose. If an object is not functional or so crazy beautiful I can’t live without it, it doesn’t get in my home. If you can’t say the same maybe it’s time to let it go.

Set a timer for 15-30 minutes and commit to decluttering during that time. If this is too much time for you to commit to, set a timer for 5 minutes.  Can’t manage 5 minutes? Then pick up the object closest to you and decide if you should keep it, discard in trash, donate or sell it. If you do this everyday you will be 365 items lighter in one years time. Read that last sentence again.

If you plan to keep the item put it away, immediately. If the object has no home, designate a place for it to live. You’ll be surprised at how much progress you can make in a short amount of time.

Many people love the 7 day decluttering challenge.

Create a system for organization

Once you’ve decluttered your space, create a system for organization. Use storage containers, shelves, and labels to keep everything in its place. Pretty baskets are both functional, and well – pretty. Make sure everything has a designated spot to prevent clutter from piling up again.

Doing this may take valuable time and money to originally set up. This one-time thing of setting up a storage space for all your material items is one of the most important ways to make maintaining a clutter free environment possible, and one of the easiest ways to make cleaning more manageable.

Donate or sell unwanted items

Instead of throwing away gently used unwanted items, donate or sell them. This not only helps others in need but also prevents waste and can even earn you some extra cash.

Practice minimalism

Incorporate minimalism into your life by focusing on quality over quantity. Buy items that serve a purpose and bring you joy, rather than accumulating unnecessary possessions. My favorite design tip is less is more.

By implementing these practical tips, you can declutter your life and shift into a more organized and minimalist lifestyle.

Ways to dispose of clutter

Now that you’ve sorted through your clutter and decided what to keep and what to get rid of, it’s time to figure out how to dispose of it. Here are some ways to get rid of your clutter:

Donate

If you have items that are still in good condition but no longer serve a purpose for you, consider donating them. You can donate clothes, shoes, and household items to local charities, thrift stores, or shelters. Not only will you be getting rid of clutter, but you’ll also be helping those in need.  Your community may have an organization that will gratefully accepts your donations

Sell

If you have items that are still in good condition and have some value, consider selling them. You can sell items online through websites like eBay or Facebook Marketplace, or you can have a yard sale. Selling your items can help you make some extra cash while also getting rid of clutter.

Having a yard sale is a great way to get rid of your clutter and make some extra cash. You can advertise your yard sale in your local newspaper or online, and make sure to price your items fairly. Make sure to have plenty of change on hand and be prepared to negotiate with potential buyers.

Recycling

If you have items that can be recycled, make sure to recycle them properly. Check with your local recycling center to see what items they accept and how to properly dispose of them.

Freecycle.org is one of my favorite places to give stuff away. I easily post the item I am giving away and arrange for a porch pickup. The interested party comes and retrieves. I get rid of the item and the other person gets an item they need or want. This takes so little time to do and is definitely a win win!

By using these methods, you can easily get rid of your clutter and create a more organized and stress-free living space.
