How to Host Holiday Guests Without Losing Your Mind!
The holidays are here and with it comes the joy or dread of hosting holiday guests, friends, family, and even grumpy Uncle George. A little planning can make all the difference in creating a warm and welcoming experience your holiday guests.
Whether you’re hosting for a day or several days, here are some tips this 5 star host recommends.
Creating a Welcoming Space
Your home can feel like a welcome sanctuary for your guests, especially the weary travelers, with a little simple planning. Start with the basics!
Decluttering and Cleaning
A clean, organized space speaks volumes. Begin by tidying up common areas like the living room, dining space, and kitchen. Get rid of the piles of stuff scattered about. You may have to look with a fresh pair of eyes if you tend to live in cluttered spaces due to clutter blindness.
Clutter blindness is when we see the same things day in and out we become ‘blind’ to these things.
A clutter-free environment can make all the difference for guests to feel relaxed.
- Focus on high-traffic zones like entryways and bathrooms. Make sure there is ample room to navigate. Make your home safe.
- Remember to have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in working order. Guests check these things.
- If you can’t purge the clutter, use storage baskets to hide stray items.
- Don’t overlook floors, windows, and furniture – it’s all about first impressions.
Setting Up the Guest Room
If your designated guest room has become a repository for all your clutter, begin by transforming it into a cozy retreat by purging the things you haven’t used.
You know if you have had the stuff stashed in here since the last holiday season you aren’t using it. At the very least make some order in the room by coraling the stuff in totes, baskets, or whatever you have on hand.
- Write or print the WiFi password prominently and leave it in their space.
- Provide fresh linens, towels, a variety of pillows, and extra blankets and throws.
- Include a basket with essentials: towels, toiletries.
- Add a chair or space for luggage and clothing.
Creating Cozy Ambiance
Ambiance is everything when preparing for holiday guests. Some guests put a lot of effort traveling to spend the holidays with you. Make them feel welcome and comfortable.
Guests may arrive tired and I always encourage people to take some time alone to relax if I feel this is what my guests want.
- Give your guests a choice by using warm lighting – think fairy lights or table lamps and a good reading lamp.
- Add seasonal decorations like wreaths, candles, or a bowl of ornaments.
- Remember when using lightly scented candles some folks are allergic to scent.
Preparing Meals and Snacks
Food can bring people together, but it’s important to plan ahead for your guests’ comfort and convenience.
Here is a checklist of 24 Things to Toss & Organize!
Meal Planning for Different Dietary Needs
Considerations go beyond just what’s being served.
- Ask about dietary preferences and restrictions in advance.
- If you have time prepare a mix of dishes that can cater to vegetarians, gluten-free, or other specific diets.
- Plan a main course, a couple of sides, and dessert options to suit everyone.
- If you are unable to accomodate your guests dietary needs letting them know in advance is necessary so the guest can make arrangements.
Stocking the Kitchen
No one likes running out of essentials mid-holiday gathering.
- Stock your fridge with dairy, beverages, and fresh produce.
- Keep the pantry filled with staples like bread, nuts, and crackers.
- For drinks, have an assortment of non-alcoholic and alcoholic options.
Easy Snack Ideas
Snacks are lifesavers between meals.
- I always leave a small assortment of pre packaged snacks in guest rooms, a mix of sweet and salty.
- Bake (in advance) cookies or brownies for a sweet treat.
- Keep bowls of mixed nuts, popcorn, or fruit on hand.
Ensuring Guest Comfort
Little touches go a long way in making your guests feel truly welcome.
Providing Essentials and Amenities
Be proactive by providing items your guests might need.
- Have extra toiletries like shampoo, toothpaste, and razors ready.
- Ensure there are enough towels, bathrobes, or slippers.
Creating a Relaxing Atmosphere
Help your guests wind down after a long day. Many guests cherish alone time so don’t feel like you have to hover over company.
- Leave some books, magazines, or puzzles in a shared area.
- A pair or two of magnifying glasses available may be welcome.
- Set out a deck of cards or board games for evening fun.
- Offer tea, hot chocolate or other beverage to add a cozy touch.
Communicating with Guests
Openness and clarity create a smooth holiday hosting experience. I am very open to guests I am the kind of host who prefers they help themselves and my home is theirs while they are visiting.
For me the most important part of hosting is everyone enjoys a stress-free visit. The best way to ensure this is with clear communication.
Set Expectations Before Arrival
Avoid awkward surprises with clear communication.
- I like my guests to know I prefer them to help themselves
- Some families like to make rules known up front.
- Let them know about parking, sleeping arrangements, or pet preferences.
- Ask if there’s anything specific they’ll need during their stay.
- If you have expectations communicate this to your guests clearly.
Being Available for Questions and Help
I don’t fawn over guests because most guests don’t like this. I prefer to pre plan what I think my company needs will be and then rely on the guests to let me know if I forgot something.
- Check in casually to ensure they’re comfortable.
- Show them how to operate appliances like coffee machines or heaters.
- By all means be approachable for any concerns that come up.
Presumably your guests are here because you want them to be. Plan to have fun! Hosting holiday guests doesn’t need to be overwhelming.
By planning ahead you’ll create an experience that makes everyone feel cared for. From decluttering and meal planning to adding cozy touches, these steps ensure a stress-free and dare I say an enjoyable stay.
Relax and enjoy the laughter, stories, and cherished moments with your loved ones. If you are relaxed your guests will be relaxed.
