What Does Clutter Say About You?
What does clutter say about you? A lot more than you think. Learn what your mess reveals about your mindset—and how to finally shift it
Your Clutter Is Talking!
Are you ready to hear what your clutter is saying? First of all clutter is the symptom. What is going on inside your head is the issue.
I am trying to be in two places at once today. This does not work and it is making me crazy. Intellectually I know this. Today though there are two things I want done and in order to have a fighting chance at this I have to pick one thing to do first.
So I divided my time, set the timer, and started on the first thing. I will keep bringing my mind back to the present and not distract myself with the other thing that frankly I would rather be doing.
By the way there was a second hint embedded in that last tip, do the dreaded thing first! This is how clutter talks to us.
More Hidden Messages About What Clutter Says About You
- Burn out is real – Over crowded to-do lists are clutter. It is telling you to get real and there is only so much you can do in 24 hours.
- Perfectionism – If I only get some of my to-do list done I celebrate the win. I do the most important stuff first knowing the rest of the stuff will get down.
- Emotional challenge – Your stuff may bring out the best and worst emotions in you. This is why decluttering can be difficult
- Identity – Some of us are wrapped up in our stuff. I know this. I am still slogging through decluttering my art studio.
I wrote an article about Perfectionism and Procrastination.

Clutter Isn’t a Character Flaw—It’s a Symptom
Before you start shaming yourself realize clutter may be your coping mechanism.
Maybe you grew up in a home with very little and equate having more stuff to ‘being more’. I had to drill it into my head that I am enough just the way I am on any given day.
This reminds me of an old SNL skit when Dana Carvey looked into a mirror and recited “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it people like me’. Growing up I sadly related to that skit.
The reason I know these things to be true is I have worked very hard to resolve all the stuff that was holding me back. I positively am enough today. And so are you.
- You may be resisting growth because it could upset relationships.
- You have little confidence and do not trust yourself to make the right decision.
- You have attached success only to stuff with a monetary value.
- Some people unknowingly use clutter as an armour to keep people away.
These things are clutter and in order to become clutter-free you need to resolve these things.
Being stuck in the past and full of regrets and worried sick about the future is not a good design for living in this day.
Clear The Clutter Tool
I made a cool GPT tool and named it Clear the Clutter. This tool is a chatbot I have programmed using my multi years of experience helping people declutter their lives and our Facebook Community.
Clear The Clutter Tool
Based on your information the Clear The Clutter Tool will provide:
- Why decluttering is emotionally charged
- Why all this talk about mental decluttering first
- There are reasons behind the clutter
- Clutter is a symptom not a moral judgement
I started Declutterbuzz a few years ago because I know belonging to a like-minded community helps anyone get through what they often feel is something they alone are experiencing.
A community offers the much needed support people need when they are trying to reach a scary goal. Having a support system in place and a place to hold yourself accountable is often the difference between long term success and a fleeting win.
The FREE tool I made for you will open in ChatGPT.com and request you make an account. This can be done quick and easily using a free account. A free account is all you need to use my tool.
Talk to the tool like you would a best friend. And don’t concern yourself with privacy. I have been safely using CHATGPT for a long time and it is perfectly safe. Even I, as the owner of the tool, cannot see your protected content.

Start by Clearing Your Mind, Not the Physical Clutter
Your clutter is pointing to patterns in your mind. I’ll use myself as an example. I am not great at making decisions because what it boils down to is I hate the responsibility of making a poor decision. A poor choice can cost me both time and money.
It used to be my pattern to analyze stuff until I became paralyzed with too much information at which point I would throw my hands up in the air and say ‘I’ll do this later’.
Then I would ask everyone their opinions and get even more confused!
Now I ask myself ‘How important is this?’ Then I make a quick list of the pros and cons, make the decision and move on. This frees up so much bandwidth!
I wrote an article How to Make Decluttering Decisions Without Overthinking (like I used to!)
What patterns does your mind have and are you ready to rewire these patterns? I love moving forward, even little by slow, and if you do too please know that you can.
Changing anything may take time but you know what? The time is going to go by anyway so why not treat yourself to a better way?
You will get suggestions for little actionable steps you can take to feel some quick wins no matter what your clutter relates to.
Freedom From Clutter
You may think the freedom from physical clutter is more obvious than the freedom from mental clutter. I am not so sure about that. See, when I used to live with an overflowing, tangled up, mess in my mind my attitude was different than it is today.
I learned what was and was not important. I learned that taking ‘some’ action would get the job done too, maybe just not as fast. Baby steps can get the job done too!
I learned how to change the habits that were harming me and replacing those habits with healthy habits that would help me get to where I wanted to go. Living without constant mental clutter was so worth the initial work I had to do to get here.
By taking care of the mental clutter the physical stuff seems to organically just end up where it is supposed to.
Marj Bates is a life long ridiculously organized declutter-er and artist. Less is more are words Marj lives by in everything she does except collecting dogs. “Dogs are like potato chips! Can’t have just one.” says Marj. Marj wonders if growing up with a fanatically clean Jewish mom means her decluttering and organizational skills are in her blood.
